Studio Saturday with Saskia Ozols: Painting with the Colors of Ancient Egypt

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will host its next Studio Saturday Art Workshop on January 25, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Join painter and curator Saskia Ozols for a painting workshop focusing on the colors and pigments unique to ancient Egypt.

The class, designed for individuals ages 14 and above, will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the Lamar Educational Classroom at LASM, with a $65 admission price for non-members and a $45 admission price for LASM members. Interested participants are encouraged to register early since space is limited for workshops.

This class welcomes both experienced oil painters and beginners. The focus will be on the unique color palette of the ancient Egyptians. Each student will create a painting that they will take home.

The museum will provide all necessary materials, including tabletop easels for a shared workspace. Participants are welcome to bring their easels, favorite brushes, and tools, and we will work in a limited palette of colors that will be provided. LASM will provide a wood panel for each student.

Ozols is a painter and independent curator from New Orleans, LA. Her exhibition record spans three decades and includes regional, national, and international venues. She founded the Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans and The Ozols Collection: A Museum of American Painting and Pedagogy. Saskia has taught at Boston University, Tulane University, and Loyola University.  Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in cities including New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Moscow, and St. Petersburg, Russia. She holds an MFA from the Museum School of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Saskia currently organizes classes for the Fine Arts Preservation Society of New Orleans.

Studio Saturday: Nathalie Roy

The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will host its next Studio Saturday art workshop, "Playing with Ancient Papyrus and Ink with Nathalie Roy," on Saturday, July 19, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.

This hands-on workshop invites participants to step back in time and experience the artistry and innovation of ancient Mediterranean writing techniques in collaboration with LASM’s year-long exhibition, Discoveries on the Nile: Exploring King Tut’s Tomb and the Amin Egyptian Collection. This class welcomes both experienced artists and beginners.

Acclaimed educator Nathalie Roy, a National Board-certified teacher and the 2021 Louisiana State Teacher of the Year, brings her passion for history and STEM education to this engaging experience. As an educator at Glasgow Middle School in Baton Rouge, she specializes in teaching Roman Technology and Myth Makers, guiding students through experimental archaeology, STEM challenges, and hands-on history labs to recreate ancient Roman daily life.

In this interactive class, participants will delve into the process of papyrus and ink production in the ancient Mediterranean world. Attendees will have the opportunity to experiment with traditional writing utensils and surfaces, such as papyrus paper and wax tablets, to gain a deeper appreciation for ancient craftsmanship.
