The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will host its next Studio Saturday Art Workshop on December 14, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Join Beth Welch for an oil painting class focusing on painting boats on wooden panels.
The class, designed for individuals ages 14 and above, will be held from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM and a second class will be offered from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM in Classroom 1 at LASM. With a $85 admission price for non-members and a $65 admission price for LASM members. Interested participants are encouraged to register quickly since space is limited for workshops.
This class welcomes both experienced oil painters and beginners. Participants will learn how Welch makes her boat paintings, letting the wood grain of the panel represent water, and painting her signature boats peacefully floating on top. Welch will instruct students on how to transfer images onto panels and will cover techniques on painting realistically. LASM will provide all necessary painting materials, including tabletop easels, oil paints, painting supplies, brushes, and panels for shared workspace. Students will leave with their works of art and a sense of artistic inspiration.
Beth Welch has been involved in the Baton Rouge arts community for over ten years. She is a Baton Rouge Gallery artist and has been exhibited with museums and galleries across the United States. Welch creates realistic drawings and paintings, often conveying the intricacies of memory in the context of motherhood. “I am thrilled to work with LASM to help students create joyful and intricate studies of nautical subject matter. I will take participants through basic sketching, color-mixing techniques, and realistic painting practices.”

LASM’s “Studio Saturdays” are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the RAC.
