The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) will host its next Studio Saturday Art Workshop on Saturday, March 22, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Join local artist Robert Bienvenu for a hands-on exploration of ancient Egyptian line and portrait art. Participants will create profile portraits inspired by LASM’s new exhibition, Discoveries on the Nile: Exploring King Tut’s Tomb and the Amin Egyptian Collection. This workshop is open to both experienced artists and beginners.
Robert Bienvenu is a Louisiana artist specializing in line art and charcoal. His career includes creating artwork for local television, comics, and private portrait commissions. He also offers one-of-a-kind commissions at conventions such as Louisiana Comic Con and FAN EXPO New Orleans, where he showcases comic book, fantasy, and science fiction-inspired portraits. "I'm honored to be working with the LASM and to be teaching and drawing with a new group of artists.” says Bienvenu, "Whether you're a lifelong artist or just starting out, there's nothing like capturing a likeness and personality in a portrait. It can be through simple line work or your most detailed medium. No matter which process, it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist."
Ancient Egyptian art is known for its use of profile portraits, emphasizing clarity and symbolism. This style has influenced coinage, woodcuts, engravings, and modern digital illustration, remaining popular for its simplicity, iconic style, and ability to highlight key features in both historical and contemporary design.
The Studio Saturday workshop is open to individuals ages 14 and up, with no experience required. Participants will explore ancient Egyptian line and portrait art in a supportive workshop setting, where all talent levels can create profile portraits. While materials will be provided, participants are welcome to bring their own drawing supplies. It will be held in the Cary Saurage Art Studio in the Lamar Educational Classroom at LASM from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The cost is $35 for non-members and $25 for LASM members. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
LASM’s “Studio Saturdays” are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the RAC. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment of the Arts and funded in part by the Alma Lee, Norman and Cary Saurage Fund of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation on behalf of Cary Saurage.
